IELTS Score Requirements by Country and Course
The real band scores universities ask for, plus which countries let you study without IELTS.
Students waste months preparing for an IELTS score they never needed, or discover too late that theirs falls short. This guide sets out the band scores universities typically ask for, and where you might not need IELTS at all.
Typical band scores by level
Requirements vary by university and course, but clear patterns exist. Postgraduate and competitive courses ask for more, foundation programmes for less. Many universities also set a minimum in each of the four sections, not just an overall score.
| Level or course type | Overall band | Common section minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Foundation and pathway | 5.0 to 5.5 | 5.0 |
| Undergraduate, many courses | 6.0 to 6.5 | 5.5 to 6.0 |
| Postgraduate, most courses | 6.5 | 6.0 |
| Competitive or professional courses | 7.0+ | 6.5 |
The section minimum catches people out
You can hit your overall target and still be rejected for missing the minimum in one section, often writing. Prepare across all four skills, not just the ones you find easy.
How countries differ
The UK tends to ask for 6.0 to 6.5 for undergraduate study and 6.5 for postgraduate. Australia and Canada are broadly similar. The US often accepts IELTS but many universities prefer or also accept other English tests. Germany and parts of Europe frequently accept a range of proofs, and English-taught programmes vary in what they require.
Studying without IELTS
Many Pakistani students can skip IELTS entirely. If your previous education was in English, a growing number of universities accept a medium-of-instruction letter from your school or college as proof of your English ability.
- Medium-of-instruction letters, accepted by many universities
- Alternative tests such as PTE or TOEFL where IELTS is not required
- University-run English assessments in some cases
- Waivers for students from English-medium backgrounds
We check whether you qualify for any of these before you spend time and money on IELTS. It is one of the quickest wins we find for students.
Preparing efficiently
Once you know your exact target, prepare only as far as you need. Focus practice on your weakest section, sit the test when you are genuinely ready, and avoid burning through multiple attempts. One well-prepared sitting beats three rushed ones.
